What a beautiful day! I love Fall in Downe Township. I took a walk on our nature trail designated "Course 3.12" and I took a few pictures for the Nature Center Virtual Tour I'm building. See it HERE.

How many of you think that I am responsible for a cell phone tower not getting built on Sharp Lane?

How many of you believe that my law suit is responsible for no cell tower in Fortescue or Newport?

How many of you think I'm responsible for poor fishing in the Delaware Bay over the last few years?

How many of you think that I am responsible for global warming?

If you think I'm responsible for any of the above happenings you are very mistaken.

Most residents of Downe who haven't been here for very long--like less than 20 years--don't understand how the township works. There is a 'power clique' in Downe which controls family and extended family voting practice...which until recently was strong enough to control things.

Through hard work of many volunteers and the overwhelming support of enough voters we now have a five person committee which will soon be making decisions for the common good rather than the good of certain selected families and groups.

Stay tuned. Much more to follow on this subject. It's an election year.

Most important of all!!! PLEASE send my URL to any and all your friends. Please send the http://BernieSayers.com link to everyone you know. You'll be glad you did.

Chester Riland's head cheerleader, Larry Jordan, Sr., has written a factual incorrect and totally clueless letter in support of Chester which was printed in today's Bridgeton News along with my letter.

The only thing in Larry's letter which comes through clearly and obvious is his membership in the I Just Adore Chester Riland Fan Club.

Larry has come to one township committee meeting since he lost the election. Larry knows nothing first-hand about Chester's disengenuous words and showmanship.

See his letter and my comments, below. The letter is titled "Let Riland finish the job he started."

Let Riland finish the job he started

Don't fall for it!

Airborne!

Give him one more term to complete what we need as taxpayers. Forget about who likes whom.

Give Riland one more term and give Downe Township another step backward.

Look at the facts. Riland has served three years on the township committee and is close to receiving the necessary PILOT funding bill for tax-exempt property that will help lower our taxes.

Yes! Let's look at the facts.

Riland will never get any PILOT funding bill because he failed to meet the filing requirements and date dead line for the League of Municipalities. See my letter below about his grandstanding ploy for voters rather than meeting the filing requirements. Jordan is clueless about these issues.

He stated this mission in his first election, let him finish the job he started. Riland knows more about running this township than anyone we could elect.

Riland knows more than anyone about ways to take this township into moral and fiscal bankruptcy.

That is why we have elections, to elect someone to make decisions for the majority, right?

Did you sleep through Civics and Problems of Democracy class, Larry? We have elections to choose people who represent all of us, not just the majority. Oh, wait, you are accustomed to having rampant favoritism--where the in-families and the in-groups get preferential treatment.

This is not a popularity contest! This is an election of our representative to move Downe Township forward in a positive way.

I agree that this is not a popularity contest; this is an election for the people of Downe Township to finally get rid of the favoritism and dishonesty which has plagued their wonderful township.

This is an election to get rid of Chester Riland.

If you want to know what a man will do, just look to see what he has done.

You know, Larry, this is exactly what I was thinking after the last election while I watched our ambulance take Joe Ready to the hospital three years ago.

Just look at what Chester has done.

What has Meyer done?  Nothing positive. Meyer has never been involved any community activities. During his last campaign, Meyer accused past committee members of doing things wrong.

Nothing positive? Are you nuts?!

Earl Meyer gave over 20 years of his life to this country while serving in the United States Navy. He is retired from the Navy.

Did you serve your country?

I know I did. Airborne!

He sent DEP and the Health Department to my place of business falsely accusing me of having oil spills. Three different times a full inspection by DEP and Health Department officials found no oil spills or any violation. False reports!

Show me! I dare you.

Show me written proof that Earl Meyer sent the DEP and Health Department to your place of business and I will place the documents on this website for the ENTIRE WORLD to see.

Please, Larry, I'll even drive down to your place of business on Gandy's Beach Road. Oh, wait, that's not your business, that's where you live. Just where is your business?

Is this what we want for Downe Township?

No. What we want for Downe Township is for Chester Riland to not be re-elected.

Don't fall for it. Vote for honesty, vote for Chet Riland.

Airborne on the 'don't fall for it'! Vote for Earl Meyer.

October 26, 2006

I sent the following letter to the Bridgeton News earlier today:

Dear Editor:

Three years ago I reluctantly endorsed Chester Riland for a position on the Downe township committee. I made a big mistake. It is clear from watching him at meetings over the last three years that he is unable to work with the other committee members.

As evidence of his inability to work with others, I reference the October 21st article by Jean Jones entitled “PILOT formula change is sought”. Mr. Riland is credited in the article with presenting a resolution which addresses various PILOT issues. He presented something which he called a resolution but it was not a real resolution because the committee never voted on it.

What your paper reported was political grandstanding by Mr. Riland. He saw a reporter with a notepad and he did his show. His reading of a ‘resolution’ was nothing but his last minute grab at headlines and copy prior to the election.

The Downe committee did not endorse his ‘resolution’ with a motion and a vote. They couldn’t---even if they had wanted to---because he never gave them a copy. He never asked for their input. He never asked for public input. He did his little show at the very end of the meeting, after public participation, within an agenda period referred to as “Committee Comments” which he created when he was Mayor to make sure that he got the last word…rather than to allow the public to have the last word. Take note: he did not present this during either new or old business. Had he done so, the other committee members would have been able to discuss the issue.

The document given to me by the Downe clerk when honoring my OPRA request was a letter written, and I suppose mailed, on October 5 to the League of Municipalities. The League protocol requires a summary to be sent by the first Friday in October. Mr. Riland wrote a letter addressing PILOT issue to the New Jersey League of Municipalities without a motion and vote. He wrote the letter on Official Downe Township stationary.

Even worse, the League protocol requires the full text resolution which references statutory change---and his certainly does---to be sent by the third Friday in October. He never asked for a comment from the committee, the solicitor or the public for the final, full text ‘resolution’.

Downe Township needs a committee person who is open, candid and who will work with the other members.

Vote for Earl Meyer in November.

"Sayers Talks Trash" was on the front page of today's Bridgeton News today.

Sayers talks trash. Indeed!

The article fails to mention that I've been talking trash for over 20 years. Trash is what got me into attending Downe Township meetings and observing the antics of local politicians. Trash is the reason I attended my first meeting and it's the reason I attended the meeting last week. Trash is the reason I started the DDT Newsletter. Trash is the reason I'm writing this blog. Trash is the reason you're reading this sentence.

The talking trash article can be read by clicking HERE.

Right now, back to trash and the article. The article indicates that I received a letter from the township informing me that Downe Township businesses could no longer take trash to the Inconvenience Center. It  was not mentioned at the meeting but I also asked the recycling coordinator where she got the list of business name. She didn't know.

I know. The Downe Township Zoning Office, Robert Campbell, is the source of the list. Mr. Campbell has a website and domain known as the NewportHouse.net with a page listing many businesses in Downe Township listed. A direct link to his business page link is HERE.

How do I know this? Because the letter I received from the township is addressed "Sayers Enterprises" with my box number and Newport, NJ. I do not have a business called Sayers Enterprises. I have owned about eight businesses and have never had one names Sayers Enterprises.

Sayers Enterprises is a fictitious company Bob Campbell created so he wouldn't have to put my actual company name prominently at the top of his business list. My company name should be listed as "AI Command" which would put it first in his list. Currently, his first position is "Al's Bait and Tackle Shop". Rather than give me the alphabetically correct position in first place he creates a fictitious name even though he knows full well what the correct name is. See this:

Sayers Enterprises / AICommand....Computer services and consultations.

Keep the above in mind. Read on...

The article begins with my question:

What is the definition of a business and what defines a convenience center?

From the article:

Steve Clarke, chief investigator for the Cumberland County Improvement Authority attended the township committee meeting to answer the second.

The Cumberland County Improvement Authority sent their chief investigator to answer my question!

Why in the world would the Cumberland County Improvement Authority find it necessary to send a representative to a Downe committee meeting to answer my simple question: "What is an Inconvenience Center?"

Trash? Yeah, I'll talk trash.

October 21, 2006

I spent quite a bit of time on Google today researching for the articles I planned to write on the subjects, below.

I'm quite focused on the issues of the Downe Inconvenience Center and the requirements for such facilities to operate. There is way too much to digest in the short time available.

Any reasonable man will conclude the location of our Inconvenience Center is not the place to put a solid waste facility. I'm confident that employees of the CCIA, DEP and EPA will be reasonable. So will you when you understand history and situation.

One of the other issues was Comcast's quote to a Money Island resident of $73,000 for cable service to the house. Here is the actual first paragraph of the Comcast letter:

Thank you for your inquiry concerning availability of cable television. As you requested a survey by Comcast Cable Communications has been completed and determined the cable plant will have to be extended 3.56 miles to service your location. The cost to construct the plant is $72,859.90.

The letter also indicates that payment in full is due before work can start. Plus, the quotation is good for only 90 days.

Such a deal!

Oh, wait, you say there isn't a We Just Adore Chester Riland Fan Club? Well, of course not formally, in writing with a charter and bylaws but there are actually people who have put signs supportive of him and made by Margaret (Meyer) Weiss in their yards. They must be fans of Chester to allow something like that to take place.

What I find interesting is that Margaret has gone to such great trouble to support someone in a election who is running against her brother. Her signs are cute, artistic, big and mostly clueless regarding Mr. Riland's real accomplishments. Margaret has been coming to township committee meetings for only a few months: she hasn't seen Chester in his arrogant splendor.

Speaking of Chester's arrogant splendor, he out-did himself on Wednesday night, he truly did. I'll be writing a longer article tomorrow after I research the requirements for votes on resolutions and the process for sending letters out on the Downe Township letterhead...and making his letter to appear to be the 'official' position of the committee.

Chester Riland was never given permission to send a letter to anyone regarding PILOT funding issues. A motion was made and seconded to give him permission to 'draft a resolution'; the motion was not made to give him free reign to send documents appearing to be the official township position.

More soon.

I'll be researching the Inconvenience Center issues more tomorrow as well as researching just who the Cumberland Development Corporation is and why they are involved with Downe Township. We have a Planning and Zoning board. Duh.

October 20, 2006

The Downe Township Committee held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 18th. I counted 21 people who were township residents in addition to the following: Bob Brewer from the County planning and economic development; Tony Stanzione from the Cumberland Development Council; Steve Clarke from the Cumberland County Improvement Authority; and Margaret (Meyer) Weiss, creator of many election signs around the township as well as holding the ad hoc chairperson's job with the We Just Adore Chester Riland Fan club.

Things I'll be covering tomorrow:

Why does Downe Township need to be a member of the Cumberland Development Council?

Why do we need the County Planning board doing our planning? [There is a clear conflict of interest that needs to be addressed.]

Why would the CCIA send a representative to our committee meeting with the intent of stroking me into being a "reasonable man"?

Why did Chester Riland read a resolution which had never been distributed to other committee members?

Why would he read his resolution AFTER the close of the public portion of the meeting?

Also, I have a fascinating letter from Comcast Cable that I want to share with you. A Money Island resident inquired about cable to their home. Are you sitting down?

Comcast wants $73, 000 to hook her up!!

More details and a solution to the terrible Internet connections...and expensive ones!...that most of Downe's residents must endure. I have a much better and cheaper way.

Stop back here on Saturday, October 21 for the details.

October 17, 2006

I attended the Millville City Commissioner's meeting tonight.

My main reason for being at the meeting was to show my support for the Thunderbolt Raceway. There was a standing room only crowd but not everyone was there for Thunderbolt issues, by any means, with over a dozen people voiced heated opinion on issues as diverse as taxes, re-evaluation, taxes and affordable housing. Did I mention there were many comments about taxes?

Commissioner Joseph Derella made a presentation regarding taxes with a PowerPoint demonstration. I was too far from the screen to see the presentation so I concentrated on listening to Mr. Derella's statements with my eyes closed. He was amazing!

Not once in almost 15 minutes did he say 'er', 'ah' or hesitate once to find his words. In the 25 years that I have been attending committee and board meetings I have never heard a better presentation than the one he provided. He was super; flawless; amazing.

The question now is: "How can we get Mr. Derella to explain to the residents of Downe Township how the township became more than 70% tax exempt and why so few people understand the Downe School District budget?"

Although I enjoyed Mr. Derella's presentation, the highlight of my evening at Millville's City Hall was setting off the security alarm.

Maybe even 'alarms' considering how very upset a women was to find me in the stairwell after my attempt to get out of the building.

After using the men's room, I decided to take the stairs marked EXIT which was right next to the men's room so I that wouldn't have to walk through the entire meeting room. I pushed open the door and descended the steps. I had followed the EXIT signs twice before when leaving meetings regarding the Raceway so I expected to do the same this evening.

When I got to the bottom of the stairwell I saw a door which I thought was the EXIT door that had used before. A sign on the door read something like "...this door must not be opened except in an emergency." I thought, "oops" and I didn't touch the door.

While reading the sign I heard a female voice calling from the top the stairwell. I ascended the stairs and met her while she was frantically punching buttons on a security keypad trying to shut off the screaming alarms that I couldn't hear. "You can't use this exit," she said, in an obvious agitated state.

I said I was very sorry but that I had used the exit twice before. She told me, "you can't use this exit when no one is in the building." I didn't argue with her that there was a hundred people in the building. I walked back through the council meeting room and exited the way I entered. It seemed as if people were looking at me with a 'you did a bad thing' stare.

Out front of City Hall, a Millville policeman stopped me and asked, "Did you just go into that building?"

"No, sir," I replied, "I just came out."

He asked my name. I told him. He asked what I was doing in the building. I told him that a council meeting was in progress and that I had leave to make phone calls. He said he was was responding to a security breach. I told him that I was responsible for the security breach by going down a stairwell that was not used at night. I told him that a woman was going around turning off the alarms. He talked into his radio about the situation.

He asked my name again. I told him.

It seems that I can't go anywhere without causing a fuss.

The problem with me tripping the alarm system--and then continuing on to trip more alarms--seems to be that I have lost my hearing in a range of sound frequencies for most standard alarms. I can't hear electronic alarms of any kind unless they are within a few inches of my ears. I can't hear my alarm clock unless it's next to my pillow. I can't hear my own watch when it's on my wrist.

As a matter of fact, two years ago at a ballet recital for my daughter, my Timex sports watch went off in the middle of the recital. I didn't hear it. My daughter's mom finally said to me, "Don't you think it's about time to turn off that alarm?"

"What alarm?," I asked, dumbly. Everyone else in the auditorium heard it...except me.

I have a few thousand hours of flying skydivers. During that time I experienced lots of intense engine noise and by the very rapid descent I used after the jumpers departed caused my ears to continually 'pop' from the rapidly increasing air pressure. An old pilot friend had warned me to expect hearing loss.  He was a crop duster with thousands of hours. He couldn't hear alarms and I didn't hear the security alarms

Sorry, Millville, I'll use the main stairwell from now on.

October 15, 2006

On Friday the 13th, I attended the monthly meeting of the Downe Township Seniors.  I attended the meeting so I could vote for Annette Perry to be a commissioner of the organization. I was sitting in the front row when a show of hands indicated that she was elected. I didn't catch the total number of votes for her out of the roughly 15 people present.

Annette is a retired school teacher who lives in Money Island. I've known Annette for many years and it's always a pleasure to talk with her.

Speaking of Money Island, take at look at this:

For those of you who don't know, the water is the Delaware Bay. The picture was taken from the bridge looking Northeast toward the Money Island marina. The mouth of the Nantuxant Creek is to the left in the picture.

Look at the beach area beyond the telephone pole. The difference between the street level and the water level is only a few feet. Note the standing water on the road side of the pilings.

Either the county or the township positioned a dozen or so large concrete forms, which can be seen to the right of the pilings, as a stop-gap method of keeping back the Bay.

The owner of the large white house to the right and many other Money Island residents are attending our township meetings to plead for something to be done about the lack of protection for the homes and the condition of the road.

Is the solution a retaining wall? A long, curving bulkhead? Piles of rubble?

What do you think? What is the solution to this problem? Be creative.

Attend the township meeting. Voice your suggestions. Come to the meeting!

I've been so busy with AICommand material that I haven't kept up to date with this page in the way I planned. But thanks for visiting!

Here are a few pictures and comments from recent drives around the township.

Election Year 2006

This sign is in the best possible location for an election sign in Downe Township.

It is located at the intersection of Sharp Lane and 553.

You'll see it the next time you visit the Downe Inconvenience Center.

Election Year 2006a

This sign is in a very good place in Dividing Creek.

I visited the DC town yard sale and ate a delicious hot dog with sauerkraut at the Union Hall.

I was allowed to talk politics!

This made me smile.

Another example of why New Jersey is in such terrible financial condition.

Last Sunday--Columbus Day Weekend--at 8:55 pm, I took this picture of the Bridgeton State Office building at Pearl and 49.

A Sunday night, a three-day weekend, and more than half the offices have lights on!

Hey, Governor Corzine, tell your people to turn out the lights... we aren't millionaires

On the other hand...

When I told these sea gulls about the Bridgeton State Office lights they just laughed at me.

The beauty of South Fortescue...

North Fortescue

The tide was high.

The wind was strong.

I got wet.

It was a treat.

A special place...

Very few people get to see the first tee for the first hole at the Glades Nature Center golf course.

Hole #1 is a 312 yard par 4.

If you play well, you'll see an eagle and score a birdie.

October 3, 2006

Although I didn't include a picture, below in my photo essay, I went to the monthly work session of the Downe Township committee on Monday night.

I arrived a bit late and missed much of the meeting. I was there for Mayor Harry Wilson's reading of a VX-support letter from a man claiming to be a waterman. The letter was from George Kumor of Commercial Township. In the letter, Mr. Kumor identifies himself as a waterman who was initially against the VX-dumping project but who changed his mind when he did some research.

I'm astounded that any waterman would support the dumping of waste VX by-products into the Delaware Bay from which he makes his living. It's astounding!

A quick Google search found this very scary information:

Often regarded as the deadliest nerve agent created to date, as little as 200 micrograms is enough to kill an average person, depending on method of absorption.

You can read more fascinating VX information by clicking HERE. Use BACK to return here.

I find it totally bizarre that a man who spoke vehemently against the dumping as a waterman can have not only a total change of position but a change of position which encompasses an active and extensive letter-writing campaign in favor of the dumping!

Why would anyone who changes their position on issue go to such trouble to proselytize the dumping of the deadliest substance known to mankind?

My mind is boggled by the entire issue.

During the public participation portion of the Monday evening meeting, I voiced my amazement that the letter was read. I asked what criteria they use for determining what gets read. After considerable debate among the committee members, the solicitor and myself it became evident that the committee has no criteria for what letters get read.

As curious as the lack of criteria for reading letters appears to me, it is FAR more curious that the committee would choose to read a letter which opposes the Official position of the committee. The committee passed a resolution opposing the dumping. The committee asked the duPont and Army representatives to make another presentation to Downe residents and they were rebuffed by both.

Questions for the committee

  • Why are there no criteria for the reading of correspondence?

  • Why read a letter in favor of an action for which you had previously passed a resolution opposing it?

  • Why give support to an opinion for which your constituents vehemently voiced disapproval and spent two hours arguing with Army and duPont representatives?

When are you going to address the concerns voiced to you by the Downe Township taxpayers and residents--your constituents who elected you!--who attend monthly Committee meetings...instead of those who don't live in and don't vote in Downe Township?

October 3, 2006

One of the things I like about Downe Township is how many people are writing letters and becoming active at meetings. Here is one sent to the Bridgeton News by a Fortescue resident, Letty Wenerd.

Letty writes:

"I am not trying to influence anyone’s choice in this coming election, I just want people to use common sense and think!!"

Read Letty's entire letter HERE.

October 2, 2006

I had a busy day. I took lots of pictures of Downe Township.

I started out with a flight in Dave's J-3 to photograph my Glades Nature Center. On our way back, we met a friend of Dave's in a beautiful bi-plane.

On my way home, I drove through Dividing Creek to get my mail--zip code 08315--and took a picture of the Mysterious Wandering Sign.

While I was at the opening of the Post Office in July, I mentioned that I heard a relative of  Napoleon Bonaparte was buried in Dividing Creek. John Laws showed me where. I took the picture below.

I drove to Turkey Point from downtown Dividing Creek.

The pictures below tell a story about the presence of the Natural Lands Trust in our beautiful township. The place is an attractive nuisance.

I uploaded this page at pictures at 11:06 PM Monday night.

The Glades Nature Center.

My landing strip, driveway and research buildings in front of the wing.

The skyline of Fortescue can been seen in front of the wing at the Delaware Bay shore.

Dave told me before our photo shoot flight, that he was expecting an airline pilot friend of his to fly in with his pre-WWII German flight trainer.

We met the bi-plane on our way back to Cedarville and Dave's Aerodrome after taking the pictures of The Glades.

The Mysterious Wandering sign has returned!

It stands before the 08315 U.S. Postal office next to the Dividing Creek Fire Company.

Across the street from the Mysterious Wandering sign is the grave of Countess Josephine de Castelvecchio Frabasilis.

The Countess is Napolean Bonaparte's Granddaughter.

Turkey Point tower.

The sign on the blue bucket reads "Litter burns me up!"

Is this bone human?

Maybe all those Turkey Point stories kids from Downe have heard since they were kids are true.

Do you care? Contact me for a more exact location.

October 1, 2006

It's easy to tell that the election is next month.

I received an email attachment that every resident of Downe Township should read. The document is letter written by Earl Meyer, Democratic candidate for Downe Township committee. A few snippets from the letter are below. You can read entire letter by clicking HERE.

My name is Earl Meyer, a citizen of long standing in Down Township and a resident of Fortescue.  My children were educated in our schools and my wife, Jessie, actively supported the education system while they were students.

...

You, the enlightened citizens of Downe Township, saw the reasoning behind this move and now we have a five instead of a three-member committee governing our community; at no additional cost to the taxpayers, I might add.

...

With five elected people now running the township instead of three controlled by one the pendulum has finally swung in favor of government by the people and for the people.

...

.  I would like your trust and your vote.  I promise, IF elected, I will not take my responsibilities lightly.

Very truly yours,

Earl Meyer

Have you seen the signs situated around Newport supporting Chester Riland?

Here is a picture taken recently of one sign on Methodist Road in the heart of downtown Newport.

I'm curious about the motivation for printing Margaret's maiden name in all capitals and highlighted in red.

What's all that about?

Margaret, when you have a few minutes please give me a call so we can talk about your campaign. Residents are beginning to ask why you are not supporting your brother, Earl Meyer. Please call me soon!
