Hello...
Thanks for stopping. This is my personal website where I rant, tell stories and polk fun at the world and at myself. I learned about 15 years ago that I have great difficulty with repetative tasks...like keeping a blog current. I'm going to do it this time! February 13,
2009 "Friday the Thirteenth"
Do you have any idea why Friday the 13th is supposed to be unlucky? There are quite a few explanations available but the one I like the best deals with the Knights Templar which was an extremely powerful military order of warriors whose original purpose was to protect Christian pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. The Knights amassed a huge amount of money and landholdings in many countries. They gained so much power that Philip, the King of France, was threatened buy their wealth and poltical power. King Philip secretly ordered the mass arrest of all the Knights Templar in France on Friday, October 13, 1307 - Friday the 13th Most of the Knights were charged with bogus acts and various acts "against the Crown" for which some were executed and others were jailed for life. Since then, some people believe the date is unlucky and others don't. Downe
Township is certainly keeping its name in the public eye.
The News of Cumberland County used the phrase "the plot thickens in Downe" when writing about the township. At the Monthly Committee Meeting, Mayor Blizzard excoriated the News and reporter Jean Jones for reporting news which the Mayor claimed was false information. The Mayor made it quite clear that the ex-Zoning Officer, Robert Campbell, was not "fired" as indicated in an article that Ms. Jones wrote for the News. During a lengthly and heated discussion of the issues regarding Mr. Campbell, the Mayor and committeeman Chester Riland made it very clear that if you are watching television during a Downe Township Committee meeting you are missing out. Was Mr. Campbell fired or was he not? He says he was. Mayor Blizzard says he was not. Was... Wasn't... Was! Wasn't! I will be at the next meeting to find out. Will you? In other happenings, the Downe Township School Superintendent, Dina Elliott, made a short presentation during which she indicated she will be available two Thursdays a month to discuss issues relating to the school. This is a good idea. A schedule of Thursdays when the Superintendent is available is at this link Contact the school at 856-447-4673. February 6, 2009 Today is Friday, thankfully. I had a busy week. I worked on five different computers. The most recent issue was related to my client having a dial-up connection. My client purchased one of the better Anti-Virus progams and attempted to download the purchased program. After paying for the program they set their computer up to download. Unfortunately, the program was HUGE. They told me that the download took 10 hours! Not only that, something was wrong and the program wouldn't run. They tried the download again, over night. They still couldn't make it work. They called me. I quickly determined that the program that they had purchased was 87 MegaBytes in size. They are on a dial-up, in Fortescue. The telephone service into Fortescue is not the best. It is impossible for good data transmission. I explained that their dial-up connection was operating at 26,000 Bytes per second. The program size is 87,000,000 Bytes. No wonder it took 10 hours.
My friend who lives near Philadelphia has a cable connection which could download their anti-virus program in about 15 seconds. The dialup in Fortescue took 10 hours! Maybe Downe Township should provide residents with trash collection and high-speed interent. I attended the Downe Township monthly Committee meeting on Monday evening. So did 29 other people. It's so great to look around the room and see 2 dozen people or more at every committee meeting. In the good old days, it was only Leonard Ford and myself, and occasionally a person bored with TV reruns or one who has a complaint about stray cats. |
